went to the dog rescue centre today and we were thinking of getting a dog to replace rex,son seen a lurcher,6 months old but it had its front leg amputated,he is thinking of taking that one and giving it a good home.
lurcher's are nice dogs - seen a few 3 legged cats get about and they are far more realiant you would have thought on having 4 paws - if dog is only 6 months old he will adapt easily imo
Kate I adopted a 3-legged dog from a rescue centre when he was 13 years old and he had just had his a back leg taken off. Nobody wanted a dog that old with only three legs but he was gorgeous and we adored each other. To lose a leg at 13 years of age was a big thing for him but he had a lovely life for the next three years until one evening he died of a heart attack. It' s easier for them when they lose a back leg than a front leg, as they have more weight at the front to support. Just make sure you don't over feed him. I had to carry him up a few sets of stairs, and he spent a lot of time looking for a left handed tree when he wanted to cock his leg but other than that he was brilliant and I loved him dearly. As yours is young you shouldn't have any probs.
Alba you would have laughed even more if you had watched him trying to get into the correct position to have a pee. This tree, that tree, another tree, stand to the left, shift to the right, no, right position wrong tree... and this would go on for 2/3 minutes before he got the right tree and the right position and let rip. So funny and I'm afraid after three years he still hadn't cracked it.
Katie - the pup will adapt - no reason to doubt it. My huge Newfi pup was too shy to do anything away from home. He would save it up until he got home. Used to have a lovely lawn, too :o( When he overcame his shyness he got too lazy to cock his leg - always squatted to wee - what a big girl's blouse he looked too. 12½ stone of him.
Look up A Town Called Panic on You Tube. There are loads of short movies starring the Cravendale figures. Cake is my favourite, I nearly had a hernia laughing at it!
They hardly ever bark, and like nothing better than to lounge on the sofa.
They tend to be more characterful that purebred sighthounds. Do you know what mix this one is? That will tell you a bit of what to expect.
no, they said it was just a lurcher, they said it was a lovely natured dog,i wonder why its other owners abandoned it,they might have done it because of his leg injury and they could'nt afford treatment.
Lurchers are often kept as working dogs-or for hare coursing. They were the poacher's dog of choice. Mine was found in a shed..underweight,and very timid. They are sometimes not treated all that well nor thought of as pets.
I have a 3 legged cat, he's missing a back leg and he can do everything just aswell as our other cat, sometimes even better and he can really move when he needs to and jumping onto things is not a problem.
