Open up my computer and then right-click on a hard disc drive (if you have more than one), choose properties and then tools and check now.
There isn't a scandisk on XP - it has the above equivalent that you've both mentioned, "chkdsk".

What isn't chkdsk doing for you that scandisk did?
Question Author

steve - it isn't as thorough as scandisk. on win98 it was only available in dos, and whenever I used it, a suggestion to use scandisk, as its better, would come up

thanks

You might like to look here and see if you really would want 'scandisk'.

http://www.toejumper.net/maintain4/scan4.htm

or try Google and 'scandisk xp'.

If you can happily fob yourself off then click
Start > Run and type
chkdsk /f
and then chkdsk will run in dos ;-)

You shouldn't really have any cause to use either utility with any regularity (especially with XP) - is your PC OK?
