If I have a smart phone on contract via Tesco, with an internet data allowance of 1GB per month, will I be able to tether it to my netbook?

I have searched the Tesco site without success.

No idea because you've not mentioned what phone it is.

Android phones can tether wireless from version 2.2 and there are apps to tether by usb for earlier versions.

the iPhone can thther from IOS 3 (I think) but only of you're on a official iphone data plan.

Not sure about blackberrys and symbian based phones should tether by usb fairly easily.

It's the blackberry torch. I know it is capable of being tethered, but I need to know if I can use the data allowance in this way without being charged more.
