hi

can anyone give me an idea why im having problems when i insert a camera sd card into the reader on my laptop, to view and copy photos over, please?

i insert the card, go into 'my computer', click onto the card (f) but then my laptop freezes up (says 'not responding')
the timer stays on, and then after a while a 'not responding' box comes up saying 'please insert a disc into sd card (f)

thank you for any help offered :o)

Either the SD card is corrupted ot the driver software for your card reader needs updating (IMO)
(...updating or re-installing)

thanks ap for nipping along :o)

as far as i know the card is ok, well it was the other day anyway, when photos and video was being taken,

its a verbatim 16gb sd hc card,

so what do i need, to update the software please?

(ive not used the card before, its from someone elses camera)
Find the make/model of your laptop, go to their website, look for the support section, enter the details of your laptop, they should list the relevent software as downloads (which are usually quite small files).

ok ap, will do,
thanks everso! :o)
What OS are you using ? If you are using Windows7 then there is an update which allows you to use sd cards of large storage
Question Author
hi galeck, thank you too for answering :o)
im using vista (basic)

the card still isnt working, even after doing what ap advised me to do...
grr, its really frustrating, was looking forward to seeing the photos on there.

have you any ideas of what else i can do please?

laptop is an acer aspire 5735, on vista home basic, 32 bit os, if that helps?

thank you :o)

(im just trying to look online for 'card reader updates' for the above ^^,
but im a bit unsure of whats what..)
Have you tried connecting camera to laptop with sd card still in camera. If not and you can do it, make sure camera is OFF then connect cable between laptop and camera then switch camera ON, laptop should then detect camera and display files on sd card.

hi magic merlin, thank you to you too :o)

im afraid ive not got the camera or lead here, i just borrowed the card off a relative, thinking i could just slot into the laptop ...

i will keep on looking about online to see if i can get any help/ideas, and failing that, i will see if i can get hold of the camera and lead, and try what youve said.

thanks again :o)
Question Author
hi again to anyone else who might be able to throw some light on my question up there ^^^

well, ive put the sd card in a usb reader, and tried it in another laptop, but it still doesnt play,
it shows in 'my computer' but when you click on the card, it comes up with the same message box as before - 'insert disk into sd card (f:)'
i tried the usb reader in my laptop too, and the same happens.

just wondering if its because its an 'sdhc' card? whatever hc means..?
(the card is out of a small camcorder that takes stills and video)

thanks again :o/
You can try putting the card back into the camera and follow the steps to reformat the card and see if it works. It will delete everything on the card if you do it.

hi cowtipper,
oooh nooo, i dont want to delete everything off the card, i wont be very popular if i do that! lol

right, ive been mooching about online and i think ive found out why its not working,
so ive come back to the thread, just incase someone else has the same problem any time.

and yes, i was right, its the 'hc' bit of the card thats causing the problem :-

SDHC means high capacity (4-32GB cards).
An SDHC card will fit in an SD card slot but will not work.
An SDHC slot will play both SDHC and standard SD cards.
Requires an external USB card reader that supports SDHC. Costs around £10-£15.

thanks to those that popped in offering their help, much appreciated

over n out :o}
