When I try to Defragment my computer it says "Defragmentation of HDD (C:) has been aborted due to inconsistencies that were detected in the file system. Please run CHKDSK or SCANDSK on HDD (C:) to repair these inconsistencies, then run Disk Defragmenter again." What does this all mean? What can i do to fix it?

My computer runs a SCANDSK when its crashed - seems like yours is not closing down properly.  Does it 'blue screen' when you boot it up?  If so, let it run its thing and then try and defrag.  If not, you'll have to wait for someone slightly more useful to help you out...

Aplogies for lack of real info - been to the pub!

I'm far from an expert but I would suggest that your computer thinks there are errors on your C Drive (which is often your main hard drive).  A good place to start is Norton Disk Doctor if you have this.  If not check in Windows as they may have a similar tool which will check your drives.

Turn off any screen saver you may have then try again

Go into "My Computer", then right click on the little icon for the hard drive, choose Properties, then the "tools" tab and there should be a button called "Check now".

This will run Check Disk (CHKDSK) and Scandisk. Be aware it could take 30 minuites or more depending on the size of your hard drive.

Your problem is caused by the hard drive having corrupt pointers. Even though we see the hard drive as a nice set of files, they are actually made up of lots of small fragments with pointers to them.

If the hard drive crashes, or the PC is switched off without a proper shut down these pointers can get damaged. Running these utilties tidies them all up.

WOW! How Clever Are You!

If you are on XP then put the installation disc in and go into run and type sfc /scannow (note there is a space between the sfc and the / ) run the chkdsk first though and reboot.

Running scannow will also sort any corrupted dll files and as it checks you will be asked to abort, retry or ignore. Be prepared to keep saying retry.
