Hi, as said in a previous post, any car is as good as the service it has received, the service book is very important but nowadays people do not seem to bother with that! there are many cars out there & with diesel's you are not saving a lot unless you do a lot of mileage, derv's do not give as much trouble in very cold weather providing the heater plugs are glowing as they should be. as cars of today, a lot are serviced either 6 or 12 months intervals but that is not recommended, well I would not, not for the price of a service anyway, if & when & what car you decide on if you are not well up on the Mechanics of a car, It's worth paying someone £20 >>£30 to check the car out for you, If you can afford go for cash as you can barter with money in your hand but just be aware of the Warranty, make sure they have the V5 if they do not have this, do not bye, if you decide to pay by cheque & there is a problem within the clearance date you can stop the payment, Do not bye the car when its Raining as this can give out the wrong signs of the paints bodywork, check for over spray etc, if manual check pedal rubbers for wear, last by no means least, do not bye in haste???? otherwise you may pay the price.
Look in Topic marked Cars several good answers there Ron.
there are 2 main faults with all of those cars, a) they are diesel, b) they are front wheel drive. Both are the work of satan!
Agree on the diesel R1, but I swear by front wheel drive.

I laugh in winter at the BMWs struggling to get moving.
yes that's a real worry on the 3 days of snow we have a year!
Hopkirk, regards the motor you stated, its not the car but the driver, I have not long sold a 1992 E36 never no problems in snow, I now have a E36 coupe again no problem in the last bought of snow we had, & there was a lot down our way, the right foot is the problem??
ford is best build quality
I have bad experience of the GM 1.9cdti engine, bad electrics. My brother had issues with the build quality of his Renault Espace being that his 6-month old daughter had the interior stripped down in 30 seconds. On that basis I'd go for the Ford. My wife has a Fiesta and the only problem that has is rust, but it is 13 years old.
I'd better keep quiet about FWD or R1Git will call me prat of the year again :-)
My RWD Chevette was sooooo much fun in the snow. Never a problem. Just fun.
