The cat has taken, over the past few months, to "going" in all the wrong places in the house, though she still uses the litter tray from time to time and, mercifully, uses it for her "2s". The vet can detect nothing wrong with her, health-wise. Is there anyone out there who knows of a (humane!) fix for this? Thanks in advance.

it's usually because something has changed - and it can be something that humans don't notice or think about - new anything, change of routine, visitors, carpet cleaned - the list is endless. Is there maybe a new cat in the area? All I can suggest is to keep the litter tray clean and if practical, confine her to a couple of rooms and see if that helps.

Thanks, carmalee. There's a baby on the way ... but, not much change of routine that you'd have thought the cat would notice. She spends a lot of time outdoors, in any case.

suspect she has picked up on some subtle changes within the household or...there is a new cat on the block and she doesn't feel secure going to the toilet outside.

I think you will find that once the cat has used the litter tray she will not use it again until it has been cleaned & refreshed ( in other words if she has done a wee she will not return there for a poo because it is unclean & as you are aware cats are usually very fastidious) Ron.

There may be rodents in your home, she doesn't return to her litter tray so she can stay on the hunt, if that's the case. Also, congradulations about the new addition to your family! :-)

New2Q - I too have had the same problem with my cat and found the answer in

which is a fab website for anything to do with felines. It says that if your cat is emptying its whole bladder on a horizontal surface, (as opposed to spraying up a vertical one I suppose) then there is only ever one reason and that is a dissatisfaction with the litter tray. That could be because you have changed the litter your cat is used to, or perhaps moved the tray to a new room, or most likely not cleaning it often enough. I had changed my cat's litter so I went back to the old type litter, actually pulled her old tray out of the cupboard and I put that down as well so she always has a clean place to do her business. And it worked immediately. She has never peed anywhere else since. Try it and see.
