now when i was at school (not that long ago!), they used to have the most amazing rice crispie (or sometimes cornflake) cakes. They were really gooey and rich, but not chocolatey.

The only recipes I can find nowadays are all basically "...melt chocolate, mix in the rice crispies/cornflakes and leave to cool", which makes for hard cakes, not gooey ones! Anyone have a recipe for proper gooey ones?

think i know what u mean, my mum throws in a few marshmallows when meltin the choc..all ooey and gooey

Try melting a couple of Mars Bars then add a couple of spoonfuls of syrup.....still chocolately but with a lovely caramel flavour!
I used to do it with golden syrup, marg and cocoa, can't remember the quantities
Before metrication my aunt used to make and she would say 'quarter quarter quarter' so in other words its equal amounts in weight of .. marshmallows, rice crispies and butter.  Melt the marshmallows and butter, stir in the rice crispies and put into your dish to cool.  That's it !!
Oooh, yum! My mum used to make them with chocolate (it has to be good quality chocolate), butter and golden syrup. Heavenly!
melt together some plain dairy toffees and marshmallows until blended then add rice krispies mixing gently until all rice krispies are coated then pour into a greased & lined tin and leave to cool and set, sweet, gooey and delicious, can't give definite quantities of ingredients so good luck
i've just remembered that you need butter to melt with your toffees and marshmallows, i think you need 125grams of butter and possibly the same of toffees, not sure about marshmallows but the more you put in the sweeter it will be, not recommended for dieters, let me know if you like it.

I use:

90g of rice crisps

125g of milk chocolate

2 mars bars

90g of butter

its lovely much better than the school ones.

I use:

125g of milk chocolate (needs to be broken up into squares)

90g of butter

2 mars bars (chopped up small)

90g of rice crispies

Melt all the butter, mars bars and the chocolate together then add the rice crispies put a bit of butter in the dish to stop it from sticking, when you have poured it in the dish flattern it with the back of the spoon, leave to cool for 1-2 hours. It is better than school ones, lovely not too hard and not too chewie just right.

Just found your question - I was just looking for the same thing! The recipe I used to use as a kid was definitely Rice Krispies, golden syrup, butter/marg and cocoa - but I can't remember the quantities. It was published either in a cookbook (likely) or as a promotional recipe on one of the packets of one of the ingredients (less likely). If anyone ever finds the quantities I would be eternally grateful!
I just found:

You will need:
30g margarine
1 level teaspoon of cocoa
Tablespoon golden syrup
Tablespoon sugar
7 tablespoons of cornflakes OR rice-krispies

1. Melt margarine and syrup in a pan but DO NOT boil.
2. Add cocoa. Remove from heat and stir in sugar.
3. Using a metal spoon quickly stir cornflakes until coated.
4. Spoon portions into paper cases and leave to set.

But I don't know if it's the right recipe....
