Hi just wondered if anyone has any experience of this these days. My mum is having all her radiators replaced because she has been told they all need replacing (hmmm I know...there are 19 of them in total too). I just think the radiator removal man is likely to sell these on as scrap. Is it worth looking into getting something for them ourselves?

No, not really

What reason has been given for them needing to be replaced?
Reach for your copy of Yellow Pages (or go to Yell.com) and find out where the nearest scrap yard is to you. (The category is 'Scrap Metal Merchants').

Scrap metal prices are currently at an all-time high. For example, it's only a few years since I drove my car to a scrap yard which was offering a minimum of £50 for any vehicle which was delivered to their premises. (I got £60 for it). I recently saw an ad for a firm which offered a minimum of £220 for any vehicle, and that included collection by the advertiser!).

I've no idea what 19 radiators will fetch but I'm prepared to guarantee that it will be a great deal more than the cost of getting them to a scrap yard!

Unless your mum has a pick up truck to take them there I doubt whether they will offer her much to come and collect them
19 radiators, Elvis?
That's just a couple of trips with an estate car.

Definitely - there is a chap goes round the local streets with a small lorry picking up any scrap there is about and making a good living out of it. The fact that he is Irish is immaterial.
OK I will be the nosy one, 19!! how big is the house??

Thanks, yeah it is worth a look I feel. Not too sure on reasons just that there was a leaky one and the guy said that they all need replacing! Better to do this than have one break at a later date (I knowwww....) Apparantly they are hard to check if they are all ok now (I know, I know!!) Feel I should help more but not sure how now. It smells of rip off to me. It's a large old 600 year old home they have lived in since 84 and rads have never been replaced.

400 year old sorry lol
Get a second opinion if you feel like that.
Get someone else in to check them
Chico, 19 rads in an estate car, ok if the rads are all bled and emptied
Question Author
Thanks I do need things spelled out for me sometimes; a second opinion most definitely is needed here I am gonna definitely look into that it just doesn't seem right
sunflower, they are most likely to be the old type rads and this "rad removal man" is looking to rip her off, get at least 3 or 4 quotes from reputable companies and let them know you know the score
Question Author
thanks Elvis I will x
Old type radiators aren't just scrap. They could be architectural salvage and worth quite a bit.
Why do they all need replaced?
if anything the older style rads are far stronger than the later type stuff..
