you just move it into your $ pay pal account and then you have two options. Use it to buy things off the net or hook your pay pal up to your uk account so that money can flow either way and, having done that, transfer it back onto your UK account.

unfortunately she doesnt have a u.s paypal account and in order to set one up which she has tried, you need to verify a u.s. address and they do a call back on the landline which she hasnt got obviously. i dont know if there is any other way but any other ideas more than welcome. thank you all for your help so far.
why dosen't she want to close the account? I don't understand!
Just write to them, explaining that you want the account closed and can they please transfer the funds to such and such UK bank account. If you prefer, send the letter Airsure, that way you will know that they have received it (ask at your local Post Office).

she does want to close the account in effect but is scared she may be charged for doing so, she just wants her money out and be done with it. im still not sure about paypal, can anyone please explain how this works?
well, firstly i would let my friend worry about it, not me.
Secondly, if the account has monthly charges, and she just takes all the money out, but dosen't close it down, she will start accruing debt won't she? If she ever thinks she will want to go to the USA again, it will be a good idea not to have accrued (say) 10 years worth of debt there, therefore the best and correct course of action is to write to them asking them to close the account, and sendher any money left over. I really don't understand what is so hard about this or why she dosen't want to do it
so what if she is charged for doing so? there are funds there to pay the charge
also, as regards to paypal, on my uk paypal account, it has the option to add a US bank account. If she adds her US bank account to her paypal account (UK) she can take the funds out into her paypal account, then transfer them into her uk account.

She'll end up with significantly less though, with fees and exchange

evil sheep please tell me how to do this, we cannot see how we can withdraw money from her u.s account to her paypal account now she has added her u.s account details. with regards to accrueing debt, it seems that once they have whittled down your account to nothing, it presumably closes. she had a second account and only had about $30 dollars in there, it was whittled down eg 2 x 12. 50 then the remaining ie 5 dollars minused off and that was that down to zero, she doesnt recall getting notification it was closed but can see online banking shows it is zero now.
i'm sorry i can't walk you through it because i don't have an american bank account. I can however put funds into my PP account from my english bank account by using the "add funds" button - can you do that with the US account?
also, dosen't it take a while for the account to register?
Question Author
we have tried phoning paypal but they are closed now until tomorrow so hopefully this will resolve it. we have added her u.s account details again but its not showing so you may be right in the fact that it isnt showing yet. thanks everyone for all your help, it is very frustrating when its a different system to ours and a different currency. she just doesnt want the hassle of taking foreign cheques into banks and getting more charges probably.
