Would be in the market soon for an internet phone..
im confused as to what you get charged for as in ' downloads '
i know some apps are free and some you pay for but do you get charged once they are on your phone to browse them?
for example, if i were to download the ebay site would i be charged for the length of time i was on the site or to download it?
they make it all so simple and it probably is but any advice at this time or experiance is always valued...

If you have a buy an app it is usually a one off payment. Some need renewing each year.
Apps are free to use but do use DATA if you are not on wifi.
You may have a data allowance with your contract, in which case you will be browsing for free, unless you exceed your data limit.

Just the edit HC's otherwise spot on answer.... you don't necessarily need a contract to get a data allowance. most providers now give a data allowance with each top up (02 give 500MB for each £10)

Just to clarify - If I used a wifi connection at home it wouldn't use any of the data allowance on the tariff? Is that right?

Yes, if you are using any wifi you are not using data.
Not all smartphones are wifi enabled so check.

Wifi on the phone is an excellent way to use email abroad.

Appreciate this doesn't really add anything (as the question has already been answered), but if you were on GiffGaff, you wouldn't have to worry about data charges, because there are none. You get truly unlimited bandwidth for £10 a month. If you order a SIM through an associate link (like the one I used > http://giffgaff.com/orders/affiliate/rhort ) then the SIM comes with £5 of credit on it. You also get (truly) unlimited texts and 250 minutes, and it's not even a contract; just pay a tenner and get the next month on those terms. They have other deals too, up to something like 1500 minutes for £25 (I think). Give them a whirl and see what you think of them.
