Antibiotics Issue

I was prescribed flucloxicillin antibiotics yesterday for a couple of infected groin abcesses which have come up (get them quite often) and on 500mg 4 x a day.

I had an MRI scan (small bowel) this afternoon and had no idea I had to have a bowel prep beforehand until they produced a large jug and a needle to link me up to a dye contrast machine.

The effects are self explanatory (am used to that kind of thing but OMG!) and I threw up a couple of times while trying to get it down.

Is that likely to have much effect on the antibiotics? Am a bit antsy about the abceses after the last one I had went evil and had to be removed as an emergency.

I had one antibiotic first thing, one a couple of hours before the prep and one about an hour after the scan and will have another before bed.

I would guess you've lost the ones you took before the 'prep'.

The abcesses drive me mad, just seems I'm one of those people who is just prone to them though it's been suggested before they could be linked to my PCOS. I know my immune system is a bit rubbish but can't help but wonder if there is some bacteria hanging about on me as I tend to get infections in wounds as well and had a bout of cellulitis a few years ago. I hoped they'd tested it when they removed the last abcess but seems not.

The MRI was more a box ticker my gastro wanted, keeping an eye to check still no signs of anything like Crohns causing the arthritis, malabsorption, deficiencies etc...

Thanks Lady Alex, I wouldn't be surprised if they are long gone and still have the after effects so not sure about the other one. Not sure whether to take an extra one or two in the night after it settles a bit or just carry on with the course as normal.

If it was me, I'd double up at night....just my thoughts, not a 'trained opinion'.

No problem...Flucloxacillin is well absorbed probably in the duodenum and proximal small bowel.

Just carry on as usual.

In fact, you might be just the man to know another query I had - what makes the wierd noises in the MRI scan and why are there different noises at different bits of the scan? Bear in mind I'm not very sciency/technical though! A friend did try and explain once about the bangs (something popping?) but it obviously didn't stick.

I tried to distract myself with the noise that always seems to be on in the room until I got the picture in my head of a little monkey with little maracas type things and had to control myself before they started the scan to be good and keep still.

No worries Sqad, the advice you have given is just what I needed.

Thanks bednobs, I could actually feel vibrations a couple of times in the scan. Only a few little bits when certain noises.

You might be correct about the PCOS being a problem with infections. PCOS causes your body to make too much insulin but your body doesn't deal with it effectively. Insulin resistance (I think) is what it is called. I was prescribed Metformin to help with the problem - but have since become diabetic.


Hope the abscesses clear up soon - they sound painful.
