If somebody broke into my home and tried to attack my 84 year old father, I would have no qualms about protecting him, even if it meant stabbing the burglar. As far as I'm concerned, the burglar has no rights when he enters my father's home in an attempt to burgle him.

Agree with Sir Alec, my lovely Dad is 83 and I would move heaven and earth to protect him, and my Mum - no question.
