as a follow on to my other lunchtime saga a few months ago, this has to top it! i suggested meeting a friend for lunch at a local garden centre. we chose from the menu, realised that we had to order up at the bar so i went and as i didnt have my handbag with me, i put it on a tab. at the end we went up to pay, i got out my card and said i hadnt got enough cash. he didnt offer to pay towards it or split the bill and only when i had paid, he said thank you, might gracious of you! i couldnt believe how assuming he was and how unchivalrous! i was so peeved when i left him. i just said you can pay next time, maybe we can come back here, i was stunned. am i wrong to feel this way? after all, if you suggest going somewhere to someone, ie to spain, john lewis ..... would i be expected to fork out for it, dont think so, Grrrrrrrrrrrr!

In fairness you should have clarified beforehand that you didn't intend to treat your guest. When you used the card to pay the total bill it could be misconstrued. If this is a friend, then there may be other occasions when you have lunch together, and you could jest that it is his treat this time; see how that's taken. Meanwhile is he aware of his odour problem ? Was wondering if a friend could make a suggestion about it.
