Your GP seems to be a bit behind the times.... http://articles.times...apital-positive-cases

Have you got a MASTA clinic near you, if the GP doesn't have a travel clinic? You need to start taking the tablets about 10 days before you leave, and carry on the same time after you come back.

Have a look here, you can generate your own on-line travel guide: http://www.masta-travel-health.com/
From the official travel health information site (funded by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and intended for use by UK health professionals):
"There is a very low risk of malaria in . . . the cities of Mumbai (Bombay) and Delhi".

Make sure that you read all of the relevant content from this page before travelling. (It might save your life):

I am not a fan of malaria tablets, due to the side effects, and the fact they don't actually prevent you getting malaria. I went to Mumbai about 5 years ago and wasn't bitten but I was wearing anti mosi spray (India actually sells an excellent one which smells of oranges and has a name beginning with O)
We always buy malaria testing kits and take these - then if you feel you have the symptoms, you can do the test and if it's positive you can straight to hospital. Make sure you are aware of the symptoms to look out for otherwise it's pointless.
we travelled to Mumbai a couple of years ago and although we took malaria tablets because of being in India, when we went to stay in Mumbai we were told there are'nt any mozzies and yet we were being bitten, so I would take them.

You don`t need them if you`re staying in the Mumbai area.
