my hoarder mum and me
30 Answers
anyone watch it? the gorgeous jasmine harman had me hooked.
a moving story of what appeared to be a genuine illness (disposophobia). but i really don't know how they had the patience. i would have probably dumped half the staff covertly hoping my mum didn't notice - i mean, how would she have done?

I dont keep old food or store garbage and broken junk etc like some do but unfortunately i am one of the few people who can genuinely say 'that might be useful one day' and actually mean it - because of my job... i work in films and tv and most of the stuff i keep is for props and sets and costume etc...so it does in fact eventually all get used...
if i didnt do this for a job, i would happily bin a massive proportion of it - i have no sentimental or hoarding feelings about any of it, for any other reason than it saves me a lot of time and money in the long run...and even makes me money, as i can charge for the hire of things.
right now i have had a problem searching around for an empty brandy bottle...we have no budget left to buy one, so need an empty and ive spent about 2 hours now searching...only the other day my boyfriend threw a load of empties out...and i knew it would be sods law that i would need them...it has happened so many times that as soon as i bin something i get a script in which i need it and have to spend hours looking for anohter, which is very frustrating.
my main problem is i am naturally untidy and that doesnt help...if i was tidy and could get it all boxed and catalogued on shelves etc...there would not be an issue...as i have 2 prop and art rooms.
i regularly bin stuff and give loads to charity too
i am not the only one in my family like this either...my dad, my grandad and uncle is too, and maybe others im unaware of...
i can walk around my house easily though, its nowhere near like hers...

I didn't realise until I watched this programme that this is actually an illness.
There is a huge difference in those of us who keep things because 'it might come in handy one day' or who keep things for sentimental reasons and those who are true hoarders like the lady in the programme.I'm just amazed that there is no treatment for this type of illness. There are cures now for all sorts of phobias but is this a phobia? I would have thought there would be some form of psychiatric treatment for it. Her poor children have really suffered also.

There was a series from America highlighting people like this, it's heartbreaking to see it and you wonder how they can live like it. Most of them don't want to it seems and know they have a terrible problem but their mental health really prevents it from changing. I think most of them have had traumatic childhoods and the lady last night apparently did with moving at an early age and her things being thrown away, several of the previous shows I saw, the people there had similar backgrounds. Terrible when you think of it, but how sad it is all round especially for the children who live with it for years. I too am surprised there is no help for it, they don't even consider it is a condition apparently so there's nothing done for the people concerned.
