Labelling school uniform

Usually I just write our surname on the labels of the uniform but can anyone recommend a good laundry pen or have any other suggestions? Boy #1's polo shirts are sooooo expensive I am consisting getting them micro-chipped. Thanks

annie, sorry, but no point in that!.............kids just lose clothes, they end up in the lost property box!.......nobody wants to steal clothing!.......kids just leave things behind and if they are labelled they usually can be found..............

Gosh, I never realised the difficulties involved with keeping school uniform. Might go for the micro-chipping option after all. Thanks for all your answers.

welsh - times have changed - people do steal clothing and then swear blind it is theirs! not only in my kids school, colleagues at work whos kids go to other schools have the same problem.

If you don't want to sew them in yourself you could always get the boys to do it........

Have to agree with Annie on this one.

Dzug - I can just about manage to sew labels in, the boys have no chance. Tried to teach daughter #1 to tie her shoe laces today and got nowhere (she is only five) so no chance of teaching the boys to sew!

scenario: kid "a"s sweatshirt getting too small, kid "b" has a bigger sweatshirt - swap it when getting changed for gym. kid "a"s parents cut out label and job done! Poor kid "b" is left with ill fitting scabby sweatshirt and you can't prove anything.

annie, thankfully, doesn't seem to happen here!........if kids misplace clothing, it's cos they just forgot to bring it home, and it will be in lost property the next day!.....

it didn't use to happen here either welsh, but it's getting more common. I've lost a few over the last couple of years - we and the school pretty much know where they have gone but can't prove anything. I buy my son's sweatshirts plain and unbadged from a different supplier so they are a different make from standard, and then take them to the school supplier to get the badges sewn on. Even with the label cut out they are slightly different from standard. I made no secret of that fact and haven't "lost" any since Easter :o)

i now write their name on the inside of the collar and/or cuff rather than on the label - it's double thickness so the pen doesn't show through. I write on the label for the kids own benefit to help them spot their own.

If they're going to take it, they'll only remove the stitched on label
