My mum says that you can't put banana's in the fridge because it does something to them, But she can not remember what it is? Great!! I would like to know if there is any truth in this as I have put them in the fridge and ate them. I am pregnant so really need to know why or if they are dangous.

Makes them go black and horrible, like they do if you have kept them to long.
A good chef told me recently that you shouldn't keep bananas with other fruit as it makes the other fruit rot quicker

Very useful info thanks guys

I'd heard that too andyjevs - I think the ripe bananas give off a gas called ethylene, which speeds up the ripening process of other fruit too.

I also heard that if you put bananas in the fridge the outside will turn black, but the inside doesn't ripen, and they are still fine to eat normally.  The black outside would put me off though!

i keep my bananas in the fridge!

The skin does turn black, but the inside is unaffected, and they last for WEEKS!

I meant to say taste them same and last longer
Hi simsfreq,  well when something gets colder it contracts (basic science stuff) so when you take it out of the fridge it must warm up, expand and then taste longer.
My mother in law told me to wrap the bananas in newspaper and then put in the salad drawer of your fridge, will last longer......soooo she says :-)))
