Morning all... :-)

Can anyone recommend a half-decent mower, please.

I've got a bog standard Flymo (the hover sort) but it doesn't really do the job very well.
I think it's more to do with the grass itself, as opposed to the actual mower. I had some gypsies lay it for me, and I swear they just ripped it up from a field... it's like a bloody meadow!

Whenever I use the Flymo, it seems to be ripping it up it clumps, rather than "hovering" over it smoothly.

Anyway, I think I need a new mower. Can anyone recommend one to use please.
Oh, and I don't want to spend much either!

Thanks :-)

How big is the lawn...is it flat or sloping has it got straight edges or little curvy bits....
Oh, they also deliver for free I think.
If you have dodgy grass, then a new mower will not necessarily solve the problem - it might be a better saving in the long run to get your lawn re-laid, depending obviously on the size involved.
i have a bosch one, its always done good for me.
Morning,
Either the grass has not been laid level or the mower itself has been set too low, check both before splashing out on a new mower which wont make any difference, if one of the two above is the problem.
might be worth hiring a heavy roller and going over it... fill in the worst dips and hollows and cut on a high setting for a while... but if the turf was really rubbish it probably is worth having it re done
clever marketing has made these products popular.....

like many dual- featured products it simply fails to deliver on quality....

it has just two functions to perform...cut grass and hover

and fails to be effective on both counts
Ransomes - google them

It's about 100ft, and is fairly level. The edges are all straight, only stopping where I've planted fruit trees. I've got a strimmer for the edges and those bits though.

I was thinking petrol too, so thanks for the link... even though they were all really expensive. I was thinking less than 100 quid... or is that not possible for a decent one? Hmmmm...

I did think about getting it laid again, but it seems like such a massive job. Also, I think if I was going to do that, I'd probably wait until next year now, as it's not gonna get much use from the kids now.

I'll have a look at my current one, and see if I've got it set to "too low", though I'm not even sure if it's got this option.

Thanks again to all :-)
Take a look round B & Qs etc., they are all starting to sell their gardening goods off cheap to make way for Xmas goods. Noticed this over the weekend.

I'd go for a rotary mower, petrol powered.

Good idea, SlackAlice. I think I'll go and have a look in a bit. I mowed half of it yesterday, but gave up as it wasn't doing a very good job.
I use this type for a really good finish with stripes. £67.99 free delivery.

daddy's got a stripey lawn and, as much as I'd like one, I think the kids would somehow ruin the effect.
Great mower, by the way Carlton. I actually wanted an old fashioned push-along one, but can't seem to find one anyway.
I ended up getting a cheapo from B&Q today. They had a 20% off sale, so figured that'd be my best bet. It's petrol, so should do the job.
Wish I'd seen Carltons post now.... :-(

Ta very muchly :-))

Honda? Er... they didn't do those in B&Q.... :/
You can always take it back and say it doesn`t do what it says on the tin.
Re alice's post, I'm sure I had an email this week (which I deleted) advising that B&Q have got a 10% off offer this weekend!
Something with a Honda GCV engine. They are reliable runners, and dead easier to start. Modern Briggs & Stratton are rubbish and plasticy. There are now made in USA and even the carbs are sealed and plastic rubbish.
(I really couldn't recommend a push mower for a 100ft garden!)
Didn't know anyone bothered with them any more.
