I have solved all the clues bar 25d and have seven of the nine letters that reveal the name of the character who disappeared. The letters I have are: a n t i t u e but I just cannot see the name. Furthermore I cant work out the unclued entries that apparently may assist in solving the direction being followed. Anyone out there that can help?

There could be an "o" in that name also?

You only have five of the correct nine letters so far: the first four and the U. Your second T and E are wrong, I'm afraid. If you've almost completed the grid you should be able to have a stab at some of the words which make up the unclued entries

OK think I've got the character be it from a Shakespeare play or from classical studies. I don't know which and I am not familiar with him. Have had a 'stab' (don't know if that was a hint or not in your post) at the unclued entries and can only come up with: death, sooty, egress and possibly swansong and heaven. Just can't see the others.
haggis58, it sounds like you have the character all right. You want the first one, not the historical one. If you've googled him you should find out the direction which made him famous. And that should explain the theme and the way the unclued entries work. You're on the right lines with the unclued entries too. One of the ones you have should have a capital letter.

Stab wasn't meant to be a hint, though the character did meet an unfortunate end
hmmm turnerjmw - can't help but think you may have enjoyed an unfair advantage on this one given the avatar - don't suppose you have any inside info on the culprit do you?
Hope all is well, cheers, cJ.

Thanks Turnerjmw - eventually got there 'bearing' in mind my limited knowledge of the 'fictional beasts'. Even using google took me some time to find them all. Only one thing still puzzles me - the title of the crossword is 'noises off' so I was expecting an anagram of noises to yield another name! Were you thinking the same?
Haggis - the title was another nice touch I thought - if you look up the phrase in Chambers, you will see that it gave a hint as to the type of direction needed.
