53 Answers
My blokes brother has just got together with a girl who already has two girls and he's just said to his siblings, dont worry about buying for me for xmas just buy for the kids! I understand as you get older and its gets more costly its easier to just buy for children, but they are not even his and we've only met them once at a wedding!! Would you buy them in my situation??

He's not thinking of himself, but of his partner and her children and asking that you make them happy - which in turn will make him happy. If you were going to spend money on him anyway it's not like he's being cheeky asking you to shell out - he's just asking you to spend the money elsewhere.
as far as I can see all he's said is "If you're going to buy something, do it for the kids, not for me." That seems reasonable enough (and kind): he's thinking kids appreciate presents more than adults. No need for it to be expensive. And of course no need for anyone to buy anything at all if they don't want to.
I would naturally buy the kids presents ( I don't believe in all this 'step' and 'half' and 'that child's not really yours so it doesn't count' etc) as I'd consider them my nephews and nieces, just as when I got together with my wife I considered her son to be my son from that point and she considered my boys to be her boys. The fact that we went on to have two daughters of our own mattered nothing- all the kids were ' our' kids, no steps, halfs etc- and that sounds like what your brother is trying to do as well.
It sounds as though you really just don't want to do it in which case don't buy them anything but I too, like everyone else can't for the life of me understand why- they're little kids, it's Christmas- give 'em a present.

Well actually I have bought for kids I've never met who family members have taken on because they came with latest boyfriend / girlfriend- in fact you just made me realise that my one son's girlfriend has a little girl ( who I've never met) and I'll have to be buying for her because in effect ( whether I've met her or not) I'm her pseudo-grandfather since their parents are together. Boo's right you're thinking too much- it hadn't even occured to me I would have just done it and never given it a second thought.
