This is a very personal statement. While those of you who know me could never, by any stretch of the imagination, call me a homophobic, I will never again shop in Tesco.

Tesco funds Gay Pride but drops
support for Cancer Research

Tesco has sparked outrage after dropping its support for the Cancer Research 'Race for Life', and announcing shortly after that it would now become a headline sponsor of Britain's largest gay festival.

There is no comparison between the two.
One needs all the money it can get for research into a cure for a deadly disease.
The other should be self financing. What benefits are to be gained for mankind
from a gay festival ?

can we have straight pride? Sorry but why a charity for it, like its an illness. Gays want to be treated equally so stop trying to spotlight yourselves. If i said i was straight and proud of it that would be wrong for me to say.
Why would it?
It wouldn't be. I'm straight and proud...
This may upset some people. Im no expert on homosexuality , but i do believe its not a life choice , is it ?And you cant do anything to reduce the chance yuo are homosexual can you ? But on the subject of cancer , which touches many families , and has touche dmy own . I do know research has proven smoking increases your chances of cancer as does alcohol ,alcohol is associated with an increased risk of a number of cancers.3.6% of all cancer cases and 3.5% of cancer deaths worldwide are attributable to consumption of alcohol.Breast cancer in women is linked with alcohol intake.Alcohol also increases the risk of cancers of the mouth, esophagus, pharynx and larynx, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, stomach and ovaries.
And drinking and smoking are certainly life choices. I now expect all the outraged users here to boycott all shops that sell alcohol and cigarettes. Oh unless of course they drink and smoke , but are heterosexual , so are too busy smoking and swigging alcohol whilst complaining here about those damn gays . My sympathies to anyone like myself who has been touched by cancer , my grandfathers cancer was most certainly related to smoking and alcohol consumption , but at the end of the day it was his choice. It didnt make us any less upset though. People seem more interested in bigotry and intolerance , than compassion and community these days .
Im sure there are many heterosexual charities in the uk. Youre free to support any one you like. But i really dont see a reason to be so against a charity getting a donation. If its not homophobic then its most certainly bloody miserable.
maggie - you have kept strangely quiet since your first thread. I take it that you also disagree like I do, but its not worth upsetting others is it, with our seemingly old fashioned christian views.
Unless maggiebee read the links provided and realised that there is not actually anything in this story by which to be 'outraged'?
*about which
because some gays might think im saying straight and proud like there is something wrong with being gay.
Christians , muslims , 2 religions that have a lot to answer for and both manage to cream off plenty of money to " caharitable foundations ". Never seen a poor vicar yet , or a priest.
Oh, they 'might' might they.....?
I wonder if they would really give a care?
I'm not outraged Jack but I do have my own thoughts and opinions on this as we all do ... I worked with a gay lad and he was really lovely, we got on famously, compared make up and jewellery etc and he was a real sweetie, so kind, but that didn't mean i agreed with his lifestyle...
I can't see any reference to the Tesco charity issue in your answer, Ann.
Ann - I don't agree with your lifestyle. You're probably lovely and all that!!!
Can we all now agree to differ on this subject and remain friends? :) x
Oh dear almost slipped into the old " im not homophobic i know a gay so i cant be ".Or am i being overly critical? I think not .
Question Author
As I said in my very first post I am not in any way, shape or form homophobic. In fact, thought it has absolutely nothing to do with the "Tesco" issue, my best friend is lesbian and also happens to be in a wheelchair following a road accident. The charity issue is, as I see it, completely separate. Cancer Research 'Race for Life' is a charity which will probably touch each of our lives at some time. So far as I am aware Britain's largest gay festival is not a charity?
Again, as I said in my original post, this is a very personal statement by me and I stand by it.
I like Tesco stores.
