Anything Other than painkillers and medicine to relieve a bad ear ache?

Calpol isn't an antibiotic, it's a painkiller.
So, the calpol would help the pain a bit, but if it was my small child I'd phone NHS Direct or NHS 24 depending on where you are in the country.
Ear ache is really painful.

I was told not to use a hot war bottle for ear ache (mine have all suffered with glue ear to some extent or other) as it encourages blood flow and increases the pain (or something along those lines). Make sure that your little one has pain relief and put some vapour rub/drops on them (even if they are not sniffy) to keep the airways clear.

Try a small amount of olive oil warmed to body temperature in the ear canal with a small cotton ball to hold it in...

Calpol or Ibuprofen are the two contenders for relieving earache in children.

The usual "dash for antibiotics" is ill conceived" at best and totally useless " at worst.

Monitor the situation.

I've had a lifetime of earache on and off and a hot water bottle works every time (wrapped in an old towel) - what with that and period pains I don't know how I'd have lived without one!

buy hopi ear candles for future use; today use HOT compress and then COLD alternately on affected ear, ending on a HOT! x

Calpol. In a small child, it might just be glue ear and nothing to do with an infection. Any amount of sticking things in the ear won`t make any difference whatsover. Putting hot/warm compresses on the ear could make the ear canal a nice warm, moist site for infection and could do more harm than good.
