Did the AA man actually look at your car as I am sure he would have known exactly what it was . From my experience from years ago it could be the head gasket.
i have an 06 vectra and everynow and again it would stutter then a cloud of black smoke out the back - then clear again. It may not be the same as yours but mine was caused by a blocked oil breather pipe.
the oil was being blown onto the exhaust.

did you notice what colour the smoke was?

hi there, thanks for answering. the 911 recovery guy says he thinks its from the exhaust the aa guy says it has something to do with the turbo and could cost around 800 to fix, the smoke was white
I am sure you will get more help here..........

There is a possibility that the turbo main oil seal has blown.
You really need to get someone to take a look .. This is the best I can do with your info provided.

thanks to everyone who has answered i appreciate it very much
Sorry I couldn't give you better news.
I had this but it was that the clutch was on its way out and making a burning smell and some smoke and it got worse and worse and struggle to pull away at traffic lights in the end. Maybe your clutch is slipping and burning as more force is on it trying to get up a hill.

'i have a 57 vectra automatic'

No clutch !!!
Hmmmmm
i have to say with the lack of power turbo/seal does sound a good diagnosis..
To be fair most of these AA guys are fairly switched on.
Yes .. They should be wise to that one.
A quick drive up the road would tell them.
I have a similar problem with an 07 1.9 auto. There will be a burning smell and white smoke from under the bonnet. When I look under the bonnet I cannot see where the smoke is coming from, somewhere at the back of the engine I think, and the smell is like burning paraffin. At the same time the trip computer shows a sudden large increase in fuel consumption, 1 to 2 galls per hour on idle against normal .2 galls per hour. After a few minutes the smoke stops and the fuel consumption goes back to normal. I've had a garage look at the car on more than once but they are unable to find anything. Anyone else had this?
