I would never use hemming tape on curtains. I would pin them up at the hems at first with the pins inserted vertically, what way the folds hang naturally. Hem them later on with nothing more than a loose tacking type stitch of the exact colour cotton.
Just make sure that from the side selvedge you have a right angle at the corners. Fold the long sides together so that you have a long thin strip then draw or pin right angles on the shortest edge, and cut straight across.
Alternatively, if it's a plain woven cotton fabric and the weave is "square", you can pull out a single thread right across the curtain from that starting point - that'll give you a straight line to cut across.
There is nothing to stop you ironing a straight hem edge first, and stitching above it afterwards, to make sure that you are sewing in a straight line.

Ive pinned the side hems with pins as they fold almost naturally - i have measured aswell- and ironed!!
Pulling a thread is an idea....
Corners i am plannig on just folding the two hems in if you know what i mean!?!
Thanks for all suggestions!!!!
I will hang them pinned before doing final hem however its a side curtain so length isnt going to bother me waay to much!
Im excited :0) xxx

It's a good idea to leave them hanging unhemmed for a couple of days, as the fabric will drop once the curtains are up (even if only a little bit), then you can remeasure the hem and stitch it after a few days. I remember my mother doing that - we had a whole living room of unhemmed curtains for about a month until she got round to doing it!
