For no apparent reason I seem to have developed brittle nails.

There has been no change to my diet which is well balanced.

Any suggestions for a cause and a remedy?

If you are a menopausal female, then hormonal changes are the commonest cause.
Remedy?...........no idea......sorry.
Hi Eccles, sometimes my nails go brittle and I find simple moisturising helps considerably at this time of year. Any hand cream will do, a good rub in and in a few days later, better nails.
Almond Oil - usually £1 per bottle in local chemist. Rub into cuticles every night. Works for me.

There's been no change in my personal habits, moisturising etc. I wondered if there may be an external/environmental factor.

I seem to have dipped in and out of menopausal symptoms over the years that I may have to accept that it's catching up with me.
Could be the weather, mine are always prone to be dry and brittle at this time of year. Lots of moisturising and wear rubber gloves when doing washing up and cleaning.
