Absolutely agree - especially if you are using a browser where adverts haven't been blocked.
The space with 'best answer' in it distracts me from focusing on the answers

We only have the option to click "Best Answer" on our own posts. Its not available on this thread for example, is it?

Go to an old post of your own and try it out, only OP can use it. Not harmful, offensive, controvertial or complicated as far as I can see.

Ummm, yes - that's a good point, for people who are asking for advice and so on.

Ed though - what happens if we mark something as Best Answer, then a better one is posted later on? - can we "unmark" or have more than one?
