When you buy a new car with tom-tom sat nav fitted do you have to buy the maps or pay a subscription

the co cars we get with integrated sat nav come come with the latest maps. If you buy a satnav they come pre loaded usually with the latest versions
i think you'd need to buy future upgrades but not 100% on that.
