At last the police take some positive action against the gangs of London.
/// Mayor of London Boris Johnson said tackling gangs was the top crime priority for London. ///
/// ''We've been attacking gangs from all angles. Now the Met has a concerted and determined push to take out the ring-leaders and tempt impressionable youngsters away from this destructive life,'' he added. ///
On Radio LBC this morning Mayor Johnson said "they aimed to offer apprenticeships and membership to uniformed youth organisation", to these so called 'impressionable youngsters'.
Can you see any of these vicious little thugs joining the Scouts or Boy's Brigade etc.?
And why do you first have to be a gang member before you are offered what many law-abiding youths would only be please to attain, that being an apprenticeship?

I would strongly disagree with your assumption that an Operation Trident arrest would result in a riot. Apart from Duggan, I can't think of many others. I'm happy to be corrected on this.
However, I think there's a danger in assuming that whenever the police (rightly) perform their duties, Britain's black population see it as a red flag to go for a good old' riot.
Also, it wouldn't account for the white Manchester rioters!

My post was simply trying to highlight the fact that setting up after school scout clubs is not the *only* way to reduce gang membership.
As an analogy - remember when Shannon Matthews was kidnapped, and for a brief period, we saw the lives of the ex-working classes in the Midlands - families where there was no 'male lead', families where people had literally left school with zero qualifications, families who have a mother, five fathers and seven children?
Well, there is no *one* answer to the social problems generated from THAT demographic, and I would suggest that there is Jo *one* answer to the problem of urban gang membership.

You could take another social evil - suburban Friday/Saturday night violence caused by coked up / boozed up twenty-something's - all you need to do is watch a couple of episodes of 'Boozed Up Britain' to feel the hot prickles of shame as you see some lads arrested for peeing into litter bins, fighting in kebab shops, or girls flat on their backs with their skirts hiked up above their waists, to know that there are a whole host of social problems afflicting the country that no-one has a simple answer for.
Throughout the country, from the predominantly white Midlands/North East/Liverpool/Scotland to the predominantly black and Asian Leeds/Bradford/Birmingham/London, we're seeing social problems and crimes which straddle racial lines.
Yes - there ARE single parent families that bring up outstanding kids - but then again, the are also the Karen Matthews of this world...
What is more common? I could not say, but given the choice, I would prefer to be brought up by two parents - providing none of them were so thick as to think they could have me 'abducted'...
Going back to your comments - I would ask - how many children from upper middle class families who went to private school end up in gangs (ignoring Bryan Ferry's kids who seem to be twits of the highest order)?
The hideous truth is that if you have something to aspire to, and have parents who will invest their time in you and you live in an area where you are surrounded by opportunity, then you are likely to do well at school, go to university, secure a well paid job, move to a good area, have kids who go to agood school and the cycle begins again.
If you live amongst rubbish, then unfortunately, it's more than likely that you will inherit rubbish as a life outlook.
Just one last thing - if you look at the prison population in the UK, out of 1,000 inmates, how many do you think are from affluent middle class families, and how many do you think are from 'the lower orders' (to quote George VI).
It crosses racial lines - it always has.

Thanks for a very good answer SP.
Must take you up on one thing though, you stated: /// predominantly white Midlands/North East/Liverpool/Scotland to the predominantly black and Asian Leeds/Bradford/Birmingham/London,///
"Predominantly white Midlands" Leicester is in the Midlands and you can hardly call that city 'predominantly white'.
Then of course there is the 'Black Country'
Forgive me for that, I just could not help it, :0)

/// do you mean there aren't any single parent families that are white? im sure ive seen some..honest...///
Of course not, that is obvious.
I was merely answering one of SP's points on the reasons for gang culture.
My remark about one parent black families is often given as a reason, simply because of the high proportion of absent black fathers.

I understand your dilemma AOG and see your reasoning in choosing the Canadian one.
I have a bit of a gripe about allowing 10 year olds design prestigous logos in Blue Peter competitions. Mind you, seeing the mess that is the London Olympics logo, then they might as well get a kid to do it for free rather than pay a fee.
