I have a memory foam one, I know people say thy're hot but I'm always cold so I haven't noticed that. They are not soft per se but unbelievably comfortable, I wouldn't want to change back to a regular mattress - which sorry I don't have any valuable advice to give you about.
You could try going and testing one in a shop!
We have a mattress with Miracoil memory foam built into the top layer. Its very comfortable but I find it extremely hot even in Winter (Hubby doesn't notice it) I wouldn't have another!

I will test some in shops eventually but its a while since we bought a bed or mattress and I just wanted a few opinions.
Mine has never felt hot. But maybe some folk are more sensitive than others ?
You could always try a decent depth topper first to see how you get on with it.

Decent toppers are quite expensive and if we dont like it its money wasted.
The heat thing has never worried me - I'm more interested in what people think about the longevity of memory foam - mine really hasn't lasted as well as I would have expected (certainly not as well as previous 'pocket sprung' mattresses).
How long have you had it sunnyD? Ours is about 7 years old and as good as new. It is a Tempur one though and was very expensive, maybe that's the difference, maybe not?
You angst one now with different amounts of squishiness on each side, don't know if they are particularly expensive though.
It's less money wasted than buying a mettress. And besides you can probably sell it if you didn't like it.
"MATTRESS" !! >:-(
My topper was only about £30 off ebay. I love it - warm and comfortable. I always used an electric blanket and sometimes a hot water bottle as well, but since I've had it I haven't had either.

Thanks for all your comments Food for thought.
memory foam ones are warm, I have one, but as I'm a cold person, I love it!...I think the best one for you to buy is a medium one, soft is too soft, and may make you ache, and a hard/ortho one is no good to anyone!.......
I have never owned anything other than Dunlopillo latex mattresses. I don't like sprung ones and I have tried, but hated, memory foam.
I recommend the Relyon mattresses. Go and lie down on some in the shop and find which is best for you regarding comfort. Personally I like the `soft` type in preference to the firmer type but it`s a personal thing. Don`t be in a hurry. Take your time, after all you spend a lot of time on it so it has to be just right.
All the best.
