Is there much point in getting a new tv with 1080p as opposed to 1 with 720p. Main use would be for watching sport, films(on dvd) and tv(virgin media + box via HD)

Richer Sounds is a great place to buy a TV (one of Which? Best Retailers) and as you can see (depending on size of screen) you can get a decent 1080p set within your budget.

This is a full HD 1080 40" and a great buy, I've had 2 and I'm more than happy, and it's well within your budget.
