speculation abounds as to his reasons for announcing this now, but it may just be his right time to go.

but who to succeed? amongst the candidates, I believe one stands head and shoulders above the rest, the present archbishop of York. Not because he'd be the first black archbishop of Canterbury, but because John Sentamu is probably the best CofE churchman in Britain today.

he has written for the sun - murdoch apparently proclaimed "he's joining the team" - but the archbishop's spokesman said that it wasn't his boss's practice to write for just one paper.

as to being "in the pay", the archbishop's fee for the column goes to St Leonard's Hospice.

he has been hired to write a regular column for the new Sunday Sun. I'm not concerned where his money goes to, only where it comes from.

Sentamu is agin legalising same-sex marriages and criticised William and Kate living together, saying many modern couples want to “test whether the milk is good before they buy the cow.” (He seemed to think this was somehow a bad thing.)

I’d make them all redundant. Why is it people can say pretty much what they like about, for example, the political beliefs of others, but when it comes to religion, they’re expected to keep any negative comments to themselves? Why should religion hold sway over freedom of speech?

naomi, in England, the church is part of the establishment, is part of the church.
whilst the second legislative house contains its 26 lords spiritual, there's no stopping the church poking its nose into politics.

Mushroom, yes I know that, but I was talking about people being expected to pussyfoot around the religious sensibilities of others in every day life. I simply used politics as an example of another belief system.

About 5% of the NT bible may have a vestige of embellished historical facts but the rest is just pandering to the needs of many people who need the crutches of a religion to get through life .
