I got a job yesterday! It is a part-time position working at a local shop to me. I am very pleased to be earning some money but I am concerned because it is a permanent position. When I had the interview last week it seemed more likely that I would be going to a university that is close to home, but since then I have been on open days and a university further away seems a better choice for me. I said in the interview thats its possible to keep the job up at this local uni and they have (probaby correctly) got the impression that I have accepted my place at this local uni, and will therefore be carrying this job on for a while. Really the reality is that I will have to leave the job during summer so that I can go to uni. I'm sorry if this isn't especially clear...I have been very lucky to get a job but I am concerned that they have got the impression that I will definitly be going to this local uni and therefore keeping this job there beyond september. Should I go in this afternoon and tell them that it is more likely now that I will be going to a further away uni so they are not decieved? I don't want to decieve anyone or leave a bad impression or anything! x.
I'd leave it a few weeks until they come to value your contribution, and then I'd tell them. If you tell them now they might offer it to someone else. It's not uncommon for staff to leave jobs within a few months- they can get maybe 4-5 months out of you- so they will survive.
Thanks guys...I just feel bad with them not knowing as they asked me straight out yesterday if I would manage juggling this job and uni ok and I just said yes because I didn't know what else to say! Definitly a big reason for me getting the job is that I will be doing it as well as studying...
I wouldn't say anything at the moment, you may not even like the job, or not be suitable for it , and you may change your mind in the future about going to uni altogether.
As you can see we're all of different opinions so no wonder you're unsure what to do!
Personally I'd take the job. See if you get the uni place you hope for and if so give them your notice in September if you need to leave to move away. That's 6 months away and they will not think bad of you at all.
