Some of the daffodils and narcissi I planted have come up with just leaves and no flowers. Can anyone tell me why? Did I do something wrong and if so can I remedy it for next year?
Thanks for any help - I know someone will know the answer.
Causes of daffodil blindness are listed on this page of information from the Royal Horticultural Society:
http://apps.rhs.org.u.../profile.aspx?PID=658
commonest cause is plant didn't form a flower shoot in the bulb when it was cultivated. if they are planted deep enough (at least 3 times the size of the bulb in soil depth above it and are allowed to die back completely do not tie up or cut off the leaves until they are completely brown then they should be fine next year
Thanks Chris and Rowan. I think I should have planted them deeper. I have taken off a copy of your link Chris and will try to follow the instructions to get a better showing next year. They look so nice when they are in a crowd.
I have to be honest I have never had any blind daffodils flower the next year and I always leave the leaves to die down. I now dig them up. I think it's built in obsolescence by the growers!
My newer daffodils didn't flower this year as they were caught by frost (-15°C) however, the older ones weren't touched at all. this is the first time this has happened. I'm leaving them in to see what happens next year.
