Not much fazes me anymore at work regarding customers, but one this morning was a pearler, and I had to scrape my chin off the floor when it happened.

It was about 10 this morning and a guy came to my till with 2 bottles of wine, I scanned one through, bagged it then lifted up the 2nd to do the same, only to discover it was half empty. I was totally flumoxxed and couldn't fathom out why it was half empty and why he didn't seem bothered. When I looked up at him he said "i've drank it" to which I stupidly asked "when???" Turns out he had (obviously) guzzled half of it before paying for it.

I was a bit (well ok, a lo)t taken back but said nothing, and took his money. However instead of leaving the store, he wandered of back round to the wine section, was there ooo a minute tops, then came back- dropped the now empty bottle of wine at my till and walked out!!!

I was utterly amazed....

Now my question is- could you drink a full bottle of (white- if that makes a difference) in under 2 minutes?

That's the point, NoM, male or female, they are not "masters or mistresses of their own destiny" when they are as far cooked at this - they need serious help.

If only folk had recognised the symptoms in this brother of a friend of mine (effectively my third family so I knew him); if only someone had also noticed the effects with a close friend at University, post Uni when he was a housemaster at Bradfield...........those two may just be alive to day - and then, on the other hand, they may not. But at least someone (we) had a go...
(sorry, you and B00 have hit a raw nerve on alcoholism tonight - and, yes, you and I, NoM plonk it away and probably a little too much - but we are in control (the in italicised).
An alcoholic who accepts he is an alcoholic will only get help if he wants it.

An alcoholic who does not accept he is one is in denial and would not accept help if it was offered.
A standard bottle of wine is only three doubles of spirits. An alcoholic can easily drink three doubles in a couple of minutes. I could certainly do that, when I was a practising alcoholic. But I would have the spirits, not wine. The wine is a probably a good deal cheaper than spirits, per measure of alcohol (not that we think in measures; we hand pour what we need). He is doing that to give himself a quick fix. He would do that if he had just woken up , for example. On waking, we have a great need for alcohol suddenly. I would keep a bottle of vodka by my bed, with something to mix it with, usually a carton of tomato juice. If, by chance, I forgot and found, to my horror, that I had no alcohol, there was a desperate rush to the nearest outlet. The rule was, I think, that it could not be sold before 8.30 but that changed to 8, I seem to remember. Even drinking socially, I needed a double every twenty minutes or so to keep functioning normally. He's an alcoholic; typically, like me, he would be drinking well over a litre bottle of vodka a day or its equivalent. Put in the whole context, his drinking, as witnessed, is nothing extraordinary
Where on earth did you buy your doubles!

A double is 50ml or 60ml and a bottle of wine is 750ml, I make that more like 14/15 oubles.
I always thought p!ssheads after a quick fix in the morning went for strong lager?

Still, that explains the term "Wino"
Must be my idea of a double, chuck! As I say, we don't think in measures or what is termed a unit. I was thinking that a bottle of wine is 6 , maybe 8, glasses and one glass of wine is one unit . One unit, I thought, was one single of spirits. Therefore a bottle of wine is about 3 doubles.
Your calculation assumes that the wine and the vodka have the same strength of alcohol, the same alcohol per unit of volume , I suspect.
Actually I think you might have meant 3 doubles with a mixer would be equal to a bottle of wine in quantity, where I wasn't including the mixer (I used to work in a pub and bar staff aren't worried about the total quantity in the glass, just the quantity of spirits)
