Can anyone explain (in plain terms please) why my security icon which starts off green changes to orange after about 5 minutes and then about 5 minutes later just drops off altogether? So far all my 'scans' have come back clear.

Sorry, I can only ask general question as everthing was set up for me 2 years ago by a friend as I am not very computer literate and I have never had any trouble with it till this week-end , and have watched it closely since. It comes on green when I sign on. Was hoping it might have been something simple that I may have mistakenly done.
