Decking Stain

I have a softwood decking patio, approx 40 sq metres, and as it was constructed about twelve months ago, I think now's the time to treat it with a decking stain.
I need advice please; any recommendations regarding what product to use, Cuprinol, Ronseal or any other make? Also, what's the best way to apply it, brush, spray or paint pad?
As I've never had decking in the garden before, I really would appreciate advice, especially from someone with practical knowledge of the job.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I've just done mine with Ronseal Perfect Finish with the pad applicator, but I wouldn't bother with it again. I've no problem with the stain, that looks good and seems to be doing what it says on the tin, but the pad was next to useless. I use Ronseal products on quite a few things indoor and outdoor and would recommend them but just brush it on, it's easier despite what they say.
Decking oils are better, they penetrate into the wood and help prevent cracking and splitting. Many decking stains put a film on the surface of the wood like a varnish, these can be problematic if they start to peel, flake or crack - The only way to resolve this is to strip off the old stain with a stripper or sander and start again.
