I agree "employee of the month" is a great episode, it really confuses the patient/doctor dynamic. My favorite episode of all time is "Pine Barrens", where Chris and Paulie go to the NJ Pine Barrens to bury "a hit", but he escapes. Dynamically funny, dramatic, and exhibiting all the skilful production and writing skills which has made Sops so successful.

I clicked on to post the same answer Mr D Black! Absolute classic episode.

"He's killed 60 checkoslovakians!"

I watch it every now and again when I need a laugh.

I think my favourites are 'College' when Tony takes Meadow to look at colleges and gets distracted by trying to take out the rat in the witness protection programme.

"dad...are you in the mafia?"

"some of my income comes from illegal gambling... and wot not"

and 'Commendatori' when they go to the 'old country'

Pine Barrens is obviously a classic too, but everybody goes for that one.

Yes College was agood un. "Weight' was the title of the one liked best. The genius of the sopranos is what we in the business call the arc - where seemingly small events come round to bite you much much later. Ginny Sacks backside was mentioned last night but it isnt until the next season where it becomes an issue. Like wise Pine Barrens comes back to haunt them later on. One annoyance was when Chris (or was it Paulie) shoots a waiter who criticises his tip. I was expecting that to have repecussions later but it never did. There was no 'resolution' as we say - i think it is important that gangster fiction has some sort of resolution or we just end up liking the characters and ignoring the fact they are scumbags.
i luv the sopranos but couldnt name favourite epsidodes.i think the secret of the sopranos lies in the fact that these guys are 'real' and not portrayed as perfect mafia dons ie theyve all got their own troubles to contend with in and out of the organisation.turns out it aint all that glamorous after all !
Son number 1 and always argue about what category Sopranos falls into , he maintains it's a black comedy whereas I think it's a straightforward drama. Comments?

it's drama with some humorous situations and dialogue. some of those humorous moments could be interpreted as black in their comedic nature, i suppose. but i wouldn't describe the whole show as a black comedy. i'm with you in that respect...

but why does it need to fit into any particular category at all?

That's the beauty of it, you can't categorise it at all. It's a gangster, black comedy drama! It's unique though in the gangster genre because we see that Tony is human he thinks beyond the normal mob boss, has awareness even sees a shrink. Like the episode where it get's around that Tony is playing around with Adriana, by the time it get's back to Christopher through chinese wispers it's blown (freud!) out of all proportion. Chris goes on the rampage etc etc but instead of just doing the standard mob thing, Tony set's about proving nothing happenned at one point roping in the doctor who treated Adriana after the crash that caused ll the rumours. Best TV from the US for a long time.
