Vegan diet

I am thinking of trying a vegan diet for health reasons. Does anyone here know of any nice recipes?! Also has anyone become vegan and found they feel healthier as a result? Thanks.

Though you may want to break yourself in gently: http://www.vegsoc.org is the Vegetarian Society with stacks of info.
If you want to reduce the amount of meat you consume, you can easily cut it back to eat meat once or twice a year, and then from suppliers and producers you know provide welfare for the livestock and quality of produce.
Vegan living is more than just a diet - verging on tree hugging aspects, there are reasons for this style of life - a good balanced diet can be varied quite easily though without meat, and I have to say I believe I am healthier and better off for it as I hardly have meat now myself, but when I do I get the best I can afford and treat it simply to enjoy it all the more.
Cut out alcohol and up the amount of water you drink, drop the coffee intake, loose the extra salt - use herbs for flavour instead - cut out suhar - and read the ingredients on packaging of any food you buy and ssee what you can avoid - prepared foods can have so many unnecessary ingredients - even a bag of crisps have stuff like chalk and added sugars, so make some positive changes and you will be better for it.
You go just go for it..!

Twice a year I go vegan and wheat free - as well as cutting out alcohol. I am sure it does me good but the rest of the 10 months I am a vegetarian. ( I can not face the thought of never eating egg and chips again). There are loads of great recipes on the web. I don't do it for health reasons but there is plenty of evidence that low meat is good although high fish is also supposed to be excellent.
Main thing is not to swap meat with cheese and eggs but use plenty of alternatives such as grains/pulses and soya. Some of it is just about getting your taste buds used to non dairy substitutes such as rice or soya milk.
Good luck and enjoy

I know 3 strict vegans, all of whom are permanently anaemic and run down.
I don't eat dairy for medical reasons so I make sure I take a calcium supplement. (I use rice milk for cereals and cooking/baking).
I can't remember the last time I ate meat. I'm not a vegetarian but meat makes me feel bloated and sluggish. I DO eat tons of fish and I eat a couple of eggs a week.
Despite being a woman of a certain age, I feel healthier now than I have done for years.
Good luck.

Hi scarlett, Just been looking at "Happy Days with the Naked Chef" (after making the chicken curry recipe this evening - actually, leave out the chicken and it is a great veg curry) and there was a great looking stuffed butternut squash recipe in there. I am not a veggie but I like veggie recipes every so often.
This is a good recipe book anyway and the banana & honey bread is to die for ! Try the library before deciding to buy it.
Enjoy

You're on the right track! And not just for heath reasons, but it's a good way to start. Been vegan for years, and never better. I wrote something in my blog that might get you started. There are yummy recipes (all ours/tried by us) at the end of the post. Read it here http://terranovauk.blog.com/being-vegan/ The video link is for part 1 of (up to now 4) We'll be uploading more as we make them. Hope this helps.
