These judges!
Why do we continue to allow judges to administer justice so 'casually' in this manner? Surely there should be some form of 'watchdog' to review sentences handed out to criminals. Would Justice Hickinbottom rule that the crime was not serious enough to justify a whole life tariff if the victim was one of his own?

Strangely, the source of my link has been removed from the internet. Wonder why? However, if you would like to read the details of the crime committed by the defendant, try this.

The judge said he was bound by the rules relevant at the time of the murder and today's sentencing is harsher.
He also said that the prisoner is entitled to apply for parole, but that doesn't mean he will get it. He also reiterated that the prisoner will be licence for the whole of his life, as is all offenders with life sentences.
Justice Hickinbottom is as bound by the rules as every other judge.

I shall try to put such an awful thing delicately.
He was sentenced to life for murder, not rape.
The sentence guidelines for the single rape of a child under 13 is 10 years; the range is 8-13 years in custody.
At the time of the offence the sentence guidelines for murder was 22 years (now 25 years).
A whole life tariff can be given in certain circumstances. The only applicable circumstance to this case is 'sexual motivation'.
The evidence indicates that he murdered to cover up the rape, not for sexual kicks.
So, the judge has applied the law in the same way as any other judge would.
