I have a very large garden and I am struggling to keep it neat getting overrun with weeds.

Weedkiller is very expensive these days. Does anyone have suggestions for making your own cheaply. I would like to go round the edges and make a two foot border weed free each year. The garden is on a steep slope and paving is out of the question for me.

Thank you.

sheet and bark/mulch..plant through sheeting..you will still have to weed but if you do it as soon as it shows and keep on top of it....outlay of bark and sheeting though and you will have to top up bark each year as the birds hedgehogs etc like to scatter it around a bit..
Like Murraymints said, get some weed-guard (or whatever it's called) and cover it with either bark, pebbles or some other decoration of your choice. It has tiny holes that allow water to drain through it, but will stop weeds breaking through. I think I put 2 (or maybe even 3) layers on my border and since it's been there, I haven't had 1 single weed come through :)
You'll have to cut out holes for any existing plants, but it'll be worth the time and effort in the end ......
If it is an area apart from other plants, e.g. a patio or a path, a kettle of boiling water and cheap salt will put paid to any weeds, (and plants!). Weed killers are so awful, please try and avoid it - it will kill all the good 'life' such as worms, in your garden.
So will salt Jenny
