Did this teacher deserve the sack?

Regardless of how long he held him, he never did any physical harm to the boy and the boy or his mother never made any complaint, so was it fair to ruin this man's life, surely a dressing down would have been enough?
What I can't understand is the fact that none of his fellow teachers or his Union backed him up.
