How much a Tankard is that Howard. Or should I ask, how much a Stein.

Thanks for all of your answers. Why do we not measure Miles per Litre? I appreciate one measure is metric and one is imperial but surely this would give me a better idea of my fuel economy costs.

BTW what is 33 MPG in MPL?
There are 4.6 litres to the Imperial gallon
Leaving aside all the hysterics, the reason is that MPG is what we all can understand and relate to. No doubt it will change over time to miles per litre but at the moment MPG means something to us it's a term we've always used and have a feel for we know that 40mpg is pretty good for example but 8.8MPL?? we'd have to convert it in our heads to MPG to know if it's any good. It's like us using stones/pounds and the americans using just pounds. We are both using imperial but each is incomprehensible(ie we have to convert it before we imagine the magnitude) to the other.

We are sort of getting used to weights per KG now so perhaps over time we may get used to MPL or even KPL!
Why do we buy petrol in litres when we still use miles per gallon ?
I like mpg, I can relate to that. Mind you, I still use feet and inches, old fossil or what?

The mainland europe comparison is litres/100 km
same reason a lot of people use feet and inches etc... it takes time for people to get used to stuff, and when they do they tend to stick to it

I appreciate that this is what we are used to. But with answer, I now understand that my car currently does about 19p per mile.
I think the car manufacturers use miles per gallon because, 40 miles per gallon say, sounds better than 11 miles per litre!
Strange how beer costs £21/gallon but diesel costs £6+/gallon when they have to drag it out of the ground, refine it and transport it all round the world.
Beer, on the other hand is just water with a few hops thrown in.

But check this out. The biggest con of them all is bottled water. Pound for pound it is more expensive than petrol!
I used to have a Mazda 3 and the fuel computer showed consumption in litres/100Km. Which, in perverse way actually makes perfect sense, other than being complete nonsense!! By which I mean we buy fuel in litres, and drive miles.
And the beer in my local is £31.60 a gallon.
