I think they've all retired to warmer climates.
Perhaps they are British chas. Just because they have a different colour skin does not mean they were not born here and even probably third or fourth generation by now, so they would have had the benefit of our educational system. The doctors I have seen recently have all been white British but the thing I noticed in particular were how many of them were women!
Working abroad.

When you say Asian do you mean British of Asian descent? or do you mean first generation immigrants?
It would appear that now there seems to be a greater proportion of asian/foreign student doctors who are all willing to learn and work horrendous hours in pursuit of their careers. Mayhap the general malaise in the young of this country, (expecting everything to be handed to them on a plate) is skewing the figures. I don't mean to tar all the youth with the same brush, but a lot of them do not have the work ethic. Only my opinion and I don't want to upset anyone. I see a lot of young people who are diligent and hardworking but they are fewer in number than the CBA...d
Not only that, but it costs such a lot now so that many people who would have gone into this particular profession do not do so. I think it takes about five or even more years to qualify and if you have a student loan just imagine the size of it. I think only rich people can do it, much to my dismay I might add.

i was trying not to say it but white british, i am aware of the 1st/2nd/3rd generation etc. and like i said absolutely no complaints about there work , the only white doctor i spotted turned out to be canadian !...
Well with regards to British Asians entering the medical profession I think there's a strong cultural thing going on.

Doctors have a very high status in these communities and so I suspect a lot of young Asians are strongly encouraged and pushed towards the medical profession.

You might ask why barristers and judges have been predominantly white and middle class for so long and there's a similar thing going on there.

As for first generation immigrants there's probably a number of issues - the working time directive is now ( thank goodness ) stopping people being treated by junior doctors who've had no sleep for 48 hours which obviously is going to increase the demand for junior doctors clearly some of that is being met from abroard.

The UK is also a good place to come and practice as doctors are well paid and have access to high end medecin so it's a good place to progress your career.

Frankly, speaking as someone who's wife is currently being treated for cancer, I don't give a damn if their from Mars as long as they're good at what they do

What an interesting observation and some interesting posts and comments particularly from Jake who wrote with knowledge and clarity as usual, but couldn’t resist going for the odd emotive and sensational phrase which he often does…..don’t we all at times…..48 hours without sleep…where has jakes’s post gone?

The hospitals today are a microcosm of the UK today in that one travels around the country and sees more and more Asians as one does in the hospitals. In the 50’s and 60’s there were a greater proportion of Asian doctors in the hospitals than that we see today, the main reason being that many white doctors at junior level were disenchanted with the NHS and emigrated to Canada, Australia and the USA where the prospects seemed much brighter, thus leaving a void in the NHS hospitals.
During that time the percentage of Asian junior staff was high but the percentage of Asian Consultants was low.

Without that Asian input, the NHS would have collapsed.

Now, today, there are a greater proportion of consultants that there was in the 50’s and 60’s and probably the same percentage of junior staff.

In the 50’s and 60’s the standard of Asian doctors was on the whole poor and many had no command of the English language…..the patients suffered in the healthcare that was labelled “the Envy of the World.”

In the later decades the standard of Asian doctors have improved and now many of them I would describe as “superb.”

Dicky the cook makes a good point, in that the work ethics of the Far Eastern students, the Jewish and many Asian students far surpass that of many white British students………in medicine, as a generalisation and in my opinion.

starby…… loans and money are not a deterrent to the medical students as if you REALLY want to be a doctor, NOTHING but NOTHING will stop you.

In the previous generation students were assessed on a”means test” and the wealthy parents paid the full amount of tuition fees and the poor families were given the full grant…….seemed to work quite well.

Opportunities for the working class kids were available under whichever political persuasion was in power at the time and not just as the result of left wing or Socialist endeavours.

Working in hospitals at whatever level a generation ago was a privilege….a pride…after years of study one couls put the letters Dr in front of your name and wear the badge with pride.
One never went to bed the same day as one got up…..but who cared…you were needed …you were a doctor….and that wasn’t just a job…….it was a vocation.
Ooops...Jakes' posts have returned.
One of my nephews (british) is an A&E doctor in Norfolk.................but he has just been offered a job in New Zealand.
