DONT shop when you are hungry, go after you have eaten.
DONT buy anything that is not on the list.
DONT take advantage of their "buy one get one free" offers on things like biscuits, crisps etc that you were not going to buy. Many of these BOGOF offers are on very unhealthly "snack" type food that are bad for you anyway.
DONT do lots of little shops as you spend more each time, do one HUGE shop for the basics and then buy fresh stuff during the week in local grocers or greengrocers where you wont be tempted to buy what you dont need.
Consider shopping at say Aldi who have excellent quality food at a very low price. Though some people are snobbish and say they would never shop there they really are cheaper. They may not have the range of thr lage supermarkts (35 different types of tootpaste or whatever) but your bills will be much lower.

Finally. Dont consider the supermarket your friend. They are your enemy, trying to get as much money out of you as they can. The way the shops are laid out are all designed to get you to spend more money.
Examples are placing all the "key" items all over the shop (bread, milk, meat, fruit etc) to get you to walk round the whole shop and see all their offers.
Also placing the fruit etc right at the entrance so you think it is a nice healthy clean environment. Buying fruit and vegetables at the START of your shopping is NOT the best time to do it as you put all the other food on top, do it at the end.
They also place certain items at eye level to encourage you to buy them, and place the "budget" brands right at the bottom of the shelf to discourage you to buy them.
They also put "budget" or "saver" products in bland packaging to make it seem you are a skinflint if you buy them. Hence you are more likely to buy the more expensive brand and they make more profit.
The layout, design, packagaing etc of supermarkets and their products is no accident it is a science, and these companies will do all they can to get you to spend more and more money.
Dont be lured by them.
