I recall a debate with my late MIL who, although having lived in England for 70 years, was a proud Scot and believed in independence. When I explained that the referendum would be decided my persons on the electoral rolls in Scotland whether they were native born or not she got angry and thought the Scottish diaspora should decide......

"Que d'Écossais, de rats, de poux,

Du monde, en rencontrent partout."

How far should we take this ?
Give Scotland its independence, and over a period of time repatriate all scots, this also applies to the Welsh.
That's going to really jigger up my life Owdhammer. Mr BM considers himself Scottish, having lived there with his Scottish mother from a few months old. He hates being reminded of the fact that he was actually born in Wales.

But I'd quite like him to stay here!!!
I live in the Nottingham. If all non native-born people (and their children ) where to be repatriated (that includes me) it would be like a ghost town.
"the Nottingham" ??? where did that "the" come from?
For the purposes of the referendum its someone on the electoral role. For the purpose of anything else or nothing at all, people born there or with Scottish parents can call themselves a Scot all they like.
yes but look on the bright side - at least your gun crime figures would go down.
Some Ulster-Scots want a vote too. They feel that a vote for independence would impact on them.
The line has to be drawn somewhere, or else we will finsih up with the same allocations as the F.A. use - the appears to be Argentinian, but in fact his great great grandfatrher once took a light from a passing stranger who used an England's Glory match, therefore he is qualified to play for the English National Team.

We have to be practical, and part of me enjoys a quiet snigger that Sean Connery will not be able to vote - but my stance is based entirely on his woeful inability to act as anyone other than himself, and so is entirely unjustified.
I understand there are 20 million Scots living abroad against under 6 million in Scotland....if all those abroad voted NO then even if 100% of the ones in Scotland voted YES.....I think they would be to put it mildly..a bit miffed.

...just hypothetical but maybe the electoral role idea is better after all?
Why is it that some young Scots can't get on the property ladder because of English buyers snapping up all the property for "holiday" homes. Should we send all the English back home too? Very small minded - the British have always gone out to explore and often colonise - where did the British Empire come from? Not from sitting on their ar**s at home and moaning.
