name of a film for years ago???

I have memories of watching a black and white film as a child. memories of it are rather sketchy. There was a little girl who was deaf and unable to speak.... I can remember her saying her first words whilst holding a balloon /ball??? I think there was an iron lung machine in the film too but not sure. does anyone have a clue what it might be called?
