And, since 2000, the elections have been close in the sense of the popular vote. Essentially the country has been split 50:50. Its the electoral college - the translation of the popular vote into ec votes weighted by state - that wins it, and Obama has managed to poll a pretty big number.
For all the sound and fury though, this result comes down to no change. Republicans still control the House of Representatives, whilst the Democrats still control the Senate. How the US copes, going forward, will be in large measure down to how well Obama can persuade republicans to work with him.

perhaps if romney had explained his policies and plans in greater detail; not been caught on camera calling people who need government assistance 'victims' (i.e. those who lost their jobs or the disabled); and actually pledged to tax fairly, he might have got in. just because he's rich and can afford to have the 'i'm allright, jack' attitude - does not make him a man, businessman or leader to look up to and elect. i think that's kind of where he went wrong. idiot.

it wasn't just calling people victims - he claimed 47 per cent of people didn't even pay taxes and said "my job is is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

That was so wrong. A would-be president saying he wasn't going to bother abuot nearly half the population? The president's job is to be president of everyone. That statement made him sound as if he was only going to pay any attention to the richer half of the population. No surprise if the poorer half decided to take their votes elsewhere.

Do you recall the sight , 4 years ago when three of the Secret service agents had their long coats done up , but the fourth had his open , as if he was saying ' look at me , i'm tough , i dont need to do my coat up , even though it's cold '
