I just spent the last ten minutes on the phone to someone claiming to be from Microsoft. He claimed my computer was sending out error messages to Microsoft, so I played along pretending to go into the event viewer and typing in what he told me.

He asked what I could see on my screen and so I told him I had a picture of my daughter. He asked if I run Windows, so I said yes, there is a big window in my room. Great fun! I would recommend it to anyone. In the end he told me his time was too valuable and hung up. First time I have had a cold caller hang up on me!

The best suggestion I have heard is to put the phone up to the smoke alarm and press the test button.
I just give the phone in these instances to the dog. She can't hold the handset so I just place it. At the smelly end rather than the woofy end. She does tend to be fairly flatulent. Ththbthbpt! Pity Smellyphone hasn't been invented yet.
I have such fun with these calls.
So far I've ask them to hold the line as the bill payer will be with them in a minute and I amuse myself by shouting "are you coming, Norah?" Or other such nonsense just to keep them on the line. "She'll not be long. It's her leg playing her up, you know"
Another time it was "hello? Hello, speak up will you?". They couldn't hear me laughing they were shouting so loud.
Next time I might try pretending they've rung a sex chat line.
