It was so cold today that I saw a politician with his hand in his own pocket.

winter of 63 and the massive pile up of snow, the drifts going the 3 miles or so to school, over 8 feet high either side of the road (near Lancaster).

It was the last time Lake Windermere froze over and there were cars out on the ice. Some plonker parked his car and left the engine running whilst the family went skating -and guess what, it melted the ice under the car and lo and behold it disappeared into over a 120 feet of water.
Getting out of bed on to freezing cold floorboards. No wall to wall carpets in those days. And having a paraffin heater in the toilet to stop the water freezing.

do you think it was colder then than it is now???
I remember the winter of 63. We had to trudge to school in it .None of this two flakes of snow and everything shuts down malarkey they have now .
We lived in Kent then and my Dad and eldest brother worked in the dockyard The Medway was fozen solid and they had to get the icebreaker boats to churn it up .The snow was piled up on the sides of the roads .
Not many families had cars in '63 so not as much commuting.
I don't think it was colder then, just harder to keep warm. We worked on the aircraft in large cold hangers with just localised heating. On one occasion we visited an American air force station just outside Oxford and found their hangers were centrally heated !!
If you told a kid now, that all you had for Christmas years ago was an apple and an orange, they'd say, 'Wow, lucky you, an i pad and an i phone'!
